Cruise report - Moogerah Dam near Aratula - Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd February 2019.

The last club cruise was held on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd February 2019 at Moogerah Dam near Aratula.

Those attending the cruise with craft were:-

Angus Kerr Viper 4 Cruiser
James King Revtech Renegade
Ben Woodhead Turbo XP 960
Michael Stephenson Turbo Wedge 240 / Rotax 582 65hp - Baffle.
Dieter Renisch Viper 4 Cruiser
Cle Sheck Blue Viper 4
Peter Venn Expo Turbo 240
Neil Budworth Turbo 265
Steven Odgaard Universal UH18 - Static Display - Sea Eagle

It was a hot and windy weekend, but that didn't stop us hovernuts from hauling our machines out to the dam and going for a fly across the small lake. Things didn't go well at the beginning as many craft suffered problems right from the start. James had electrical issues with his Renegade, Angus's craft kept cutting out, Cle ripped out most of the front segments from his skirt and couldn't rev over 4000 rpm, Ben was having timing and ignition problems, Neil kept popping segments, Dieter's Viper had difficulty starting and Michael had overheating problems in Baffle. Not to mention the wind. We set up tents and accommodation as best we could in the wind and then went out for a cruise.

Ben and Peter fixed the timing and ignition issues in the XP 960, then Ben handed the craft over to his dad who took it out for a fly for the first time. He did well! Cle took Aven for a fly in the Viper but struggled to get anywhere as the craft wouldn't rev over 4000 rpm. James King solved his electrical issues, and he and Elisha had fun throwing the Renegade around on the lake. Angus solved his problem, which turned out to be a dodgy fuel pump, and spent the weekend exploring the lake. Cle and Mike Rutterman solved the Viper revving issue, and afterwards managed to get it to 7000 rpm.

We then set out for a short cruise with Ben, Neil, Cle and Aven. The steering in the blue Viper pulled out of the floor in the strong wind, and they were literally blown onto a sandy beach on the other side of the lake. Cle fixed the steering but the wind was too strong and the Viper still wasn't quite right, so Ben Woodhead and Neil Budworth came across to assist. Cle took Aven back to the campsite on Ben's craft, and Ben piloted the Viper back around the outskirts of the lake.

Neil, Libby, Peter and Elaine had other commitments, and had to leave early.
The next morning we woke early, had breakfast and assessed the weather.
Angus, James, Ben and Dieter went for a cruise around the lake, Cle and Aven just stayed near the shore and played around.
It was a shame about the wind, but was still a great weekend and everyone enjoyed another camping weekend with the Queensland Hovercraft Club.

We had 26 people, 9 hovercraft and a very large 4X4 for the weekend.
Others in attendance:-
Danielle, Cameron and Annie Kerr, Kevi Graham, Dee Allen, Elisha and Keira King, Narelle, Calum and Gowan Woodhead and Ben's dad Dave Woodhead, Aven Sheck, Elaine Venn, Libby Budworth, and Mike and Jane Rutterman with a very large OKA 4x4.

Other Club news:-
Ben received a phone call from Channel 9 regarding filming 3 hovercraft to be featured in a children's science show called Brain Buzz, for an episode in which they are building a small hovercraft. The filming took place at Peter and Elaine's place at 9:00 am on Wdenesday 23rd January 2019.
There were 11 craft and 15 people in attendance.

Expo Turbo 240
Revtecxh Renegade
Hoverjet powered by Rowena 2 stroke
Ben Woodhead Turbo XP 960
Cle Sheck Blue Viper 4

Michael Stephenson Turbo Wedge 240 / Rotax 582 65hp - Baffle.
Les Taylor Turbo 235 Superwedge / Yamaha PE 485 - Phoenix.
Neil Budworth Turbo 265
Larry Franks Universal UH18-SPW - The Norm.

Others in attendance were:-
Elaine Venn, Narelle, Gowan and Calum Woodhead, Aven Sheck, Brianna and Amy Hunter.
Channel 9 crew included:-
Kellyn Morris - Host, Clare Van Dorssen - Science Communicator, Josh Logan - Sound and Simon O'Conner - Camera.

People started arriving around 8:00 am and set the hovercraft up in an organized line to be displayed for the show. Around 9:00 am the Channel 9 crew arrived and went around meeting everyone. A while later they started filming different aspects of the show.
The two hosts went out for a spin with Peter in the Expo Turbo, then in the Renegade and then in the TP6, all the time learning all about hovercraft, how they work and what they can do.
The show will be aired sometime later in May.

After the conclusion of the filming we had some lunch, then went for a short 10 minute cruise up the Logan River and back again.
It was a different and exciting day, and was fun for all involved.

Queensland Club get-together:
