September 2009
Queensland Sporting Hovercraft Club
A branch of the AUSTRALIAN HOVERCRAFT FEDERATION Inc (Vic)

Dear Air Cushion Vehicle enthusiast,
The Queensland branch of The Australian Hovercraft Federation held a planning meeting at the offices of Silverline Insulation at 12 Veronica Street Capalaba, on Tuesday, 15th September 2009. This meeting was attended by:-
Des Goss, Phillip Audsley, Angus Kerr, Arthur Stead, Dale Baxter and Steven Odgaard.
Apologies from Peter Venn who is currently spraying Vales Point Power Station ash dams at Mannering Point south of Newcastle.
Welcome to visitor:- John Dean of Bonogin on the Gold Coast.

Cruise report - Kirkleagh, Somerset Dam, Saturday 12th September 2009.

The last club cruise was held on Saturday 12th September 2009 on Somerset Dam at Kirkleagh.
Those attending the cruise were:-

Peter Venn - Turbo TP6.
Arthur & Judy Stead - Revtech Renegade.
Steven Odgaard - Expo Turbo (courtesy of Peter Venn).
Jim & Stirling Calder - Hornet MX400.
Dale & Kayleen Baxter - Sumitomo Jet Hover (static display at Fernvale).

Visitors:- Eric Yeoman from Buxton with grand daughter Ella, Sam and Mat Yeoman from Amberley with daughters Ella and Ava, and Clive Osbourne & Brian from Chinchilla.

The group met at Fernvale on the Brisbane Valley Highway between 9:00 am and 10:15 am, where boating permits were purchased for the use of Somerset Dam before travelling in convoy the remaining 65 kilometres to Kirkleagh. We were held up by a rural fire brigade burn-off along the Wivenhoe-Somerset Road at Crossdale for around 20 minutes, and arrived at the boat ramp at 11:30 am.

The Expo Turbo

The Yeoman Clan

We launched the craft from the busy boat ramp around noon and looked for a suitable spot to escape the crowded foreshore - it seems like everyone had decided on a weekend at Somerset. In the end we just mingled with the heavy boating traffic, as we had too many visitors to just run off to a quiet spot on the other side of the lake. We enjoyed a picnic lunch and then made sure that everyone had a least one ride.

Ready for a ride

Much less crowded

Another ride

Jim and Stirling Calder bought along the Hornet MX400 for it's first run since they purchased it in Cobar earlier this year. The hornet has required considerable maintenance over the past few months and it seems it still needs a little bit of work on the carby to get it performing at it's best.

Rides for all

Arthur & Stirling

Steven & Jim

Dave Osbourne and Eric Yeoman had travelled 3˝ hours with friends and family from regional Queensland which made the drive from Brisbane to Somerset well worth while. I get the impression that country people don't enjoy city traffic.

Other cruises:-
On Sunday 23rd August 2009, Arthur Stead in the Renegade, Peter Venn in the Turbo TP6 and Steven Odgaard in Peter's Expo Turbo cruised north from Peter's boat ramp at Redland Bay to the Matthew Flinders Café on Coochie Mudlo Island. This cruise was to check the Yamaha engine on the Expo Turbo which Peter and Steven had just finished rebuilding after melting a piston on a recent cruise on the Burnett River near Bundaberg. The craft performed flawlessly for the trip.

Peter & Elaine

Congratulations:-
