Cruise report - Fisherman Island , Brisbane River, Sunday 3rd May 2009.
The last club cruise was held on Sunday 3rd May 2009 at Fisherman Island near the mouth of the
Brisbane River. Those attending the cruise were:-
Des Goss - Turbo Wedge 225
Steven Odgaard - Billy Baker 2
Dale Baxter - ASV Vortex.
Angus Kerr - fishing boat.
Tony Podlich - fishing boat.
Dale Baxter and his dad Aubury Baxter made their debut cruise with Des Goss, Steven Odgaard,
Angus Kerr and Tony Podlich. Des in his Turbo Wedge 225 was the first to set off and travelled to
the end of the passage and back for a warm up. Angus Kerr and Tony Podlich each launched their
fishing boats and headed off to Bishop Island wall for some pleasant angling in the cool morning
breeze. Des then led Dale and Aub in their Turbo ASV Vortex east into the bay and then south
past Wynuum and Lota. Steven met them on their return just north of Wynuum and all three craft
cruised effortlessly home with a light southerly sea breeze and miles of smooth sand banks and
shallow water to skim over.
At 11:30 am Dale and Aub packed up and went home to prepare for another bay cruise in their
boat to the slipping sands near Cobby Cobby Island. Des and Steven then ventured out to
the mouth of the Brisbane River to find Angus and Tony who were fishing from their boats together off
Bishop Island.
The sandbanks at the mouth of the River were very much cleaner than I can remember when
Luggage Point sewerage water was discharged here a few years ago, before the recycled water
scheme was introduced for power station cooling by the Queensland Water Commission. As usual
the boat ramp at Fisherman Island was very busy with boating traffic.
Des Goss managed to find a gap and powered up the ramp and onto the apron, but Steven was
content to sit in the boat queue and loaded straight from the water’s edge and onto his trailer
with a winch when it was his turn, just to show that an air cushion vehicle can be no different
from any other small trailer boat using the bay and public facilities.
