December 2003
Queensland Sporting Hovercraft Club
A branch of the Australian Hovercraft Federation Inc (Vic)
Cruise report - Skinners Road, Carbrook - Sunday, 21st December 2003.
Dear Air Cushion Vehicle enthusiast,
Last weekend saw a flutter of ACV activity on the eastern seaboard.
On Sunday 21st December, the Qld branch had its monthly cruise and this was held on the Logan
River, south of Brisbane.
In attendance were:-
Des Goss with his trusty Turbo Wedge 225,
Steven Odgaard with his Billy Baker Vehicle 2,
Phillip and Kerry Audsley with the yellow Subaru powered Turbo 225
Tony Hogben with a powerful balsawood radio controlled model ACV, and helpers
Peter Frankland and Geoff Langford.
Visitors:- Eddie Branci and his two sons.
Eddie's eldest son may not be too impressed with hovercraft, for his first introduction to this sport
landed him with a smack in the nose when he followed his dad too closely behind Steven, who
was starting the lift engine on the Billy Baker. The narrow distance between Des's truck and
Steven's trailer meant a close encounter with an unaware pullstart back swing.
A raspberry Weis ice-cream seemed to remove any tears, but then there was a further
complication. The ice-cream had been stored in an esky at -68 degrees and the poor lad got this
delicious treat stuck to his tongue dispite the hot humid Queensland climate. He had to be helped
with a little water poured over the embarrassing situation.
I hope we see him again on the next monthly cruise.
NSW Branch - Camp Quality:-
On Saturday, 20th December, the NSW branch gave rides for children with cancer at the annual
Camp Quality event in NSW.
There were 3 craft available: 1 Viper and 2 Renegades.
It is interesting to see the use of carpet to help preserve the skirts against excessive wear on the
abrasive boatramp. After giving many rides over a rippled concrete ramp, the skirt wear can be
quite an expensive feature of an otherwise fun-filled charity event.
